Description & Additional Information

Frame cottage, nearly two full stories, with asymmetrical T-plan footprint and cross-gabled roof. Foundation concealed by horizontal board skirting; cove siding; asphalt shingle roof. Two-story front porch. First-floor porch spans center front-gabled section and side wings and has chamfered posts, flared solid decorative shingle-sided rail, plain frieze band. Second-floor porch, spanning central front-gabled section only, has chamfered posts, double-band rail with panels over flared solid shingle-sided rail; decorative plaque on rail, which dates house to 1879. Gable features two-layer decorative trusswork; recessed layer has large arched opening, at center, around which is stickwork over cove siding, second decorative truss at gable peak, flush with fascia; vergeboard with decorative rafter tails. First-floor porch shelters single doors, off center, with two-over-two window at either side. Second-floor porch shelters single door, at center. Side gables with decorative truss to match front gable. Exposed, decorative rafter tails continuous at eaves. Side windows generally two-over-two double-hung wood windows. Sympathetic rehabilitation since 1980 included reconstruction of missing second-floor front with detail inspired by surviving side gable trim.

History: Although the house bears a plaque with circa 1879 construction date, and the 1980 survey estimated a circa 1890 construction date, there was no cottage on this lot on the 1905 and 1914 Sanborn maps; it was shown on the 1924 map. It is possible it is an older cottage moved from elsewhere.
