Description & Additional Information

Two-story frame cottage with complex massing and multiple roof forms. Central steeply pitched, hipped roof with front and side cross gables. Foundation concealed by flat-sawn and square lattice skirting; wood cove siding; asphalt shingle roof. Full-width, two-story front porch with square posts, decorative geometric turned post balustrade at first floor, spindles over pierced panels at second floor balustrade. First-floor porch has arched bands of pierced scalloped decorative trim below frieze. First-floor porch spans front-gabled section, part of east wing, and wraps around west side; porch roof projects outward at southwest corner over angled stairs. Second-floor porch spans front of front-gabled section only. Porch shelters one-over-one windows with geometric decorative muntin pattern on upper sash; double front door at front of side wing. Two doors with decorative surrounds open onto second-floor porch. Decorative truss with pendant and bands of pierced scalloped trim in porch gable. Two-story addition on east side with shed roof projects from side wing. Side gables have pierced scalloped trim at vergeboards. Telescoping rear additions with hipped, shed, and gable roofs; vergeboard trim and decorative window surrounds. This cottage is a good example of the complexity and decorative exuberance of many Eastlake-style cottages in Thousand Island Park, and of the process of gradual expansion of early cottages with multiple additions.
