Description & Additional Information

Frame cottage, two stories, with generally rectangular footprint and cross-gabled roof. Foundation concealed by diamond lattice skirting; cove siding; asphalt shingle roof. Two-story porch; first-floor porch wraparound; second-floor porch beneath front gable. First-floor porch has round posts, flared solid-sided shingle rail, with square and fishscale singles, and plain frieze band. Second-floor porch has round corner posts, flared solid-sided shingle rail, screens, and plain frieze band. Gable with fishscale and square pattern shingles, decorative exposed rafters, and NYC sign. First-floor porch shelters double front door, at left, angled bay window with three one-over-one double-hung windows at right; porch also shelters secondary single door and one-over-one double-hung window on side; other openings obscured by screens. Side gable decoration matches front gable, minus sign. First floor bay window and chimney at right (southwest). Secondary side gable at left (northeast). Side windows include awning and one-over-one double-hung. Rear addition and porch, compatible.

History: A plaque on the building offers a construction date circa 1911, but as this cottage is shown in this location on the 1905 date, that cannot be correct. The 1980 survey offers a ca. 1875 construction date, which may reflect the original lot lease. It is possible that part of the cottage was built that early, but details like the angled front window, cross-gable wings, fishscale shingles, and plain porch posts are more consistent with a construction or alteration date closer to 1900.
