Description & Additional Information

Frame cottage, 1 ½ stories, with rectangular footprint and side-gabled roof. Atypical orientation with traditional primary facade oriented to the side (south) rather than facing the street. Foundation concealed by square lattice skirting; cove siding; asphalt shingle roof. Two-story porch at gable end; one-story porch along street side (east). Porch along street side has chamfered posts, delicate turned balusters, plain frieze band; partially screened, with shed roof and gable with spindlework frieze band over entrance. Gable-end porch has square posts and delicate turned balusters at first floor, chamfered posts and decorative flat-sawn balusters at second floor. Decorative truss and spindle band in gable; decorative vergeboard. Scalloped, pierced trim continuous at eaves. First-floor gable-end porch shelters two-over-two window, at right (north), single door, at left. Second-floor porch shelters two single doors and small casement window, at right. Right side gable with vergeboard. Side windows include one-over-one and two-over-two double-hung wood windows. Rear shed-roof addition. First-floor east porch, formerly enclosed, recently rehabilitated as an open porch.

History: According to the 1980 survey, this cottage was moved to this site circa 1915 from a location “near Reinhardt’s shop.” A move likely explains the “sideways” orientation and the presence of a cottage with nineteenth-century campground cottage massing and character in this part of the Park, where nearly all cottages were destroyed in the 1912 fire.
