Description & Additional Information

Frame cottage, one full story, partial second story, plus attic; generally square footprint and side-gabled roof. Concrete pier foundation; wood shingle and square lattice skirting; wood shingle and cove siding; asphalt shingle roof. Two-story, symmetrical front porch; first-floor porch is full width with central double screen doors flanked by sidelights; solid single-sided rail, round porch columns, and plain frieze band. Paired screen windows in openings. Second-floor porch, similar to a broad dormer, has flared solid shingle-sided rail, round columns, and paired glass one-over-one windows; hipped roof. Bay window on left (northeast) side; two-story slightly projecting bay window on right side. Side windows generally one-over-one double-hung wood sash.

History: The 1980 survey provided an estimated 1880 construction date. The cottage shown on this lot on the 1905 Sanborn map had a cruciform footprint with a two-story open porch at front center and one-story open porches at the front corners, partially extending along the north and south sides. The 1914 Sanborn map shows a similar configuration at rear (distinctive narrow, long one-story rear wing) but a different configuration at the front, matching what is seen today; an early twentieth-century remodeling or porch replacement would explain the variety of siding materials and the Craftsman characteristics of the front porch.
