Description & Additional Information

Two-story frame cottage with cruciform configuration and cross-gable roof. Foundation concealed by flat-sawn wood skirting; cove siding; asphalt shingle roof. Two-story front porch with one-story wraparound on both sides, terminating at front of north and south cross-gable wings. Porch has turned posts; first-floor porch has double-band rail, spindles over pierced panels; second-floor porch rail composed of tall pierced and sawn panels in unusual configuration combining curved and diagonal shapes. Pierced frieze board at first and second floors, with band of spindles above second-floor frieze and grid of pierced dot-pattern decorative panels in gable. Front-gabled section is three bays, with double doors flanked by single doors at first floor, and two doors with gable hoods at second floor opening onto screened porch. Additional doors are located at first- and second-floor front of side-gabled wings, opening onto porch at first floor and just above porch roof at second floor. Side wings are one bay wide by one bay deep, with two-over-two wood windows at first and second floor of gable ends. Two-part, one-story rear wing with two-slope shed roof. This cottage’s porch and gable detail exemplify the whimsical, inventive Eastlake ornamentation that proliferated on some cottages in Thousand Island Park in the late nineteenth century.
